Giving to those in need.

Bee The Blessing coordinates Blessing Boxes throughout Topeka to give food and essential goods to those in need.

What is a Blessing Box?

Blessing Boxes are small cabinets that are strategically placed in the areas of town that have the greatest food scarcity. They are designed for people to donate food and non-perishable items into and for people who are in need to take the food that will be helpful to them.

Why is it important

According to the Kansas Health Institute in 2019, 11 census tracts in Shawnee County were designated as food deserts (areas with limited access to affordable and nutritious food.) Food insecurity means that there is a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. According to a report in 2022 from the Kansas Health Institute, “The cost and consequences of food insecurity are substantial.”

Numerous studies have shown that food insecurity is associated with declines in health status and increased rates of chronic disease, anxiety, and depression among adults. Children who grow up in food-insecure homes are at increased risk for poor health and hospitalization, more likely to perform poorly in school, and are more likely to exhibit behavioral problems than their food-secure peers.
